Rachel Verinder is the heroine of Wilkie Collins' 1868 novel The Moonstone. Despite being the protagonist, the story is never told from her perspective, as it is in turn from the other main characters, leaving her character always seen from the outside. This creates an air of mystery and intrigue around her, as the reader is left to wonder what she is thinking and feeling.
